Evaluating Diamonds
In 1931 Robert M. Shipley founded the Gemological Institute of America to study and assess gemstones. He introduced the 4 C’s, a system for evaluating the quality and value of diamonds on color, clarity, carat weight and cut. Cut is the arrangement of facets on the stone and should not be confused with shape, the geometric form of the stone. It is very important to have a well-cut diamond because it is the faceting that makes the light refract, creating sparkle.

Vintage Diamond Cuts
The first diamonds were cut by hand giving them a very different look than today’s mathematically precise brilliant cut. During the 1500s the Rose Cut with its faceted domed top and flat bottom was introduced. In the 1700s old mine cuts were developed sparkling magically in candlelight. The Old European, which debuted in the late 1800s, was rounder than earlier cuts and is widely considered the precursor to the brilliant cut.

Diamond Love
When it comes to romance, diamonds are a lasting expression of love. A classic solitaire or a sentimental two stone toi et moi (you and me) style makes the perfect diamond engagement ring. For a meaningful anniversary gift choose a three-stone diamond ring that celebrates your past, present and future together, or choose a diamond eternity band that is a never ending circle of love.
